I write…therefore…I read

June 23, 2011 nikigreen

I can’t speak for the majority of the population, but I can speak for myself….I love to read.  I read when I was little anything I could get my hands on which gradually turned into writing.  I think I started writing y first ‘novel’ when I was twelve or thirteen…I still remember the characters names Austin and Lily…it was a Regency England piece.  At the time I knew nothing about writing and I knew even less about Regency England, but I wanted to write so badly.

This love for reading did weigh heavily on my want and desire to write.  I read constantly so that I stay entertained but also so I can grow.  There was a time in my life, though, where I would not branch out and read new authors for anything.  My mother had a library of books in our home growing up and in my senior year of high school I was introduced to Julie Garwood, Judith McNaught, Catherine Coulter and many, many others.  I tried some Jane Feather.  I dabbled with some Stephanie Laurens, but I couldn’t let myself enjoy them because of my love for Julie, Judith and Catherine….this was bad, bad, bad, bad of me.

But now, years later, I have seen the error of my younger ways and have in fact branched out (I’m so proud of myself).  My cousin Court and I have a two person reading group that we sometimes include my sister and my aunt in on and we have found several writer who haven’t, as of yet, let us down.  I thought that I would recommend a few just so anybody wanting to branch out but as of yet have not could perhaps start here.

These are in no particular order of favorites…they are listed as they pop into my mind:

Paranormal:

JR Ward: The Black Dagger BrotherHood

Jeaniene Frost: The Night Huntress Novels

Regency England Romance:

Lisa Kleypas: ANYTHING!!!

Julia Quinn: ANYTHING!!!

Erotic Romance:

Lorelei James: The Rough Riders Series

Lora Leigh: The Breed Series

Maya Banks: The Sweet Series

Shayla Black: The Doomsday Brethren

These are just some recommendations…I love it when other authors tell what they are reading or have read and love so I thought I would just pass a few great writers along to someone else…enjoy.

My writing has been slow as of late and I hate that…but the last few days I have made up for my lack of writing the last few weeks. I can tell you that the next book in the Roped series will indeed be Jason’s book. I’m really excited about this one because it was so much fun to write it also opened a lot of creative doors for me that with other characters I hadn’t even thought about yet. I did get a new laptop and a lot of my ‘free’ time here lately has been spent moving everything from one computer to the other. I really didn’t want to let go of my old laptop but when the screen totally disattaches itself for the keyboard you kind of have to let go (it’s was pitiful).

I will have more updates in the coming weeks about the whens and what is next…I’ll keep you updated as best I can and if you ever have a question all you have to do is ask…I’ll be more than happy to answer what I can:)))

Vacation is probably over just JR Wards, Black Dagger Brotherhood is amazing. Lorelei James series is awesome as well (there is some heavy sexual content with the James series)

      Happy reading

Thanks so much for the info Niki!! I love the Roped series, and will try to wait patiently for Jason!! And thanks for the reply, you have become one of my new favorites. It’s always nice to have that communication open between author/readers!! Have a great day!

Hi Nikki. I started downloading the Breed series…love it!!! I already have all of L.James books so I knew I would like your list. I am a little worried since there are 20+ books in the series and they are $9 even with my discounted Kindle price…oh well, guess I just wont have any Starbucks for a few weeks!!!! LOL! Thanks for the posts and updates. I will check in when I get back from vacation :)

I know…there are a lot of books!! I found the Breed Series four or five books in so it wasn’t that bad to try to keep up. Books, e-books and other can get expensive especially when you find a writer you really like and have to get your hands on all of their books. One thing that I do to keep the expenses down is book swapping and book trading. This can be done several ways. One of my friends and my cousin, Court, both love to read. It’s great that we also have the same taste in reading material. We switch in and out. They buy some, I buy some and the costs are cut in a 1/3. Another thing I have found thanks to another friends is a store near my home where you can buy discounted books and also trade in your books for new ones. I think this place, if I am not mistaken, requires you to trade in three used ones for one new one…it’s not a bad trade.

Reading can be expensive, but there is no other hobby I would rather have. I download soem books but I ma still a reader who loves to flip the pages of her new books so these two plans really help me…I hope you enjoy the Breed Series…Lora Leigh is a fantastic writer and her characters and plots will leave you wanting so much more…enjoy!

I absolutely agree with your authors list. I love love love the black dagger brotherhood. JR Ward was by “walk on the wild side” with my reading. I got lucking and came across your books on my nook. I am completely hooked, just finished Brent’s book today. Can’t wait to read about Jason.

    Niki,
Just read Breaking Brent last night. Totally loved it! I stumbled across Lorelei James last year and read all of her books. When I found yours last night and started reading I was so happy I found another series as awesome as the RR series. I used to be an author snob too, but I got a nook for Christmas last year and I’ve made good use of the “more like this…” feature. Love Maya Banks and Regency isn’t really my thing, but the contemporary books Lisa Kleypas wrote are on my favorites list. Can’t wait for Jason’s story and Murphy too. Keep up the good work and we’ll keep lusting after your cowboys!
